JFC Quarter Final |
We had to start this week by congratulating the Junior team and their management following their heroic win against Ballinamore in the quarter-final of the Junior Football Championship on Saturday evening in Aughnasheelin. It was a memorable victory against all the odds and one that will live long in the memory of the large Drumkeerin support that was in attendance.
After losing the toss, Drumkeerin were playing against a strong breeze in the first half however they defied normal logic by controlling every aspect of the game. Going into the break leading 6 points to 4 things could have been even better had we managed to convert the numerous goal chances in the first period.
Ballinamore are a strong side and faired very well in their group. This strength was demonstrated in the second period when they came out and started to control proceedings racing into the lead following a goal. However our lads didn't drop their heads and got themselves into contention heading into the last moments of the game. Their efforts were rewarded when Noel Flynn was pulled down in the square resulting in a penalty. It was literally the second last kick of the game and up stepped Daniel McSharry to bury the goal and give us a well deserved two point victory. Final score Drumkeerin 1-9 Ballinamore 1-7.
The whole panel deserve credit for this win. There were some excellent performances on the day. Well done to all involved as the team now move into the semi final where they face Eslin the weekend after next.
|
MFC |
It is a similar story with our minor team who powered into the Championship final following a nail biting win against Leitrim Gaels last week. Dogged with injuries the team had to work tooth and nail for their victory and can thank Cathal McCawley for a late goal which secured the win on a score line of 1-9 to 3-4. The team now play Dromahaire in the final next week.
|
IFC Semi Final |
It is a big day in the club's year as our Senior team line out in the Intermediate Football Semi Final this Saturday against Dromahaire. Throw-in in Drumshanbo is 4.45pm. Enough has been said about our win in the quarter final and the team will know that performance levels must improve ten-fold if we are to progress against a Dromahaire team who are strong favourites heading into the game. The team have trained hard and we wish them the best of luck.

Well done to the Drumkeerin lads who were victorious against Ballinaglera in the Intermediate football Championship quarter final after a fantastic second half display in Drumshanbo on Sunday. It was surely a game of two halves. Ballinaglera were completely on top in the first half, the half time score being 1.7 to 0.1. However Drumkeerin dominated the second half while Ballinaglera failed to score leaving the final score Drumkeerin 2.7 Ballinaglera 1.7. IFC Quarter Final |
It is a big day for the club this Sunday as we travel to Drumshanbo to
take on near rivals Ballinaglera in the quarter-final of the

Regardless of who we were playing it would have been a big game but a
chance to take on our near neighbours has certainly spiced up the
encounter.
The team has trained exceptionally hard since its last encounter
against Aughawillan and will be doing their utmost to win. We wish
them the best of luck.
*The game was due to take place at 7.15pm on Sunday evening in

Ladies News |
Thanks to Laurine Walpole for the following:
Under12s - The entire club is talking about the fantastic game of football that
took place on Saturday evening last in Drumkeerin. Drumkeerin were
playing their near rivals Dromahair and they needed a win to secure a
place in the A final. The last occasion the sides meet the result was
a draw therefore there was huge support out for the closely contested
game. Drumkeerin were a goal down at half time but played to their
true potential in the second half and won on a scoreline of 2.07 to
2.05. It's great to see such skilful footballers coming through for
the Ladies and well done to the girls who were applauded by the crowd
for providing such an entertaining game of football. The final will
take place on the week-end of the 3rd September.
Minors - The minors played with great heart and determination last week against
St. Joseph's and were very unlucky to lose out by a goal. The girls
were playing against Aughlin Gaels yesterday.
Table Quiz - The second of the four table quizzes took place in Forde's Inn on
Sunday night and it proved to be an enjoyable night for all. The
wining team consisted of Joe Early, Eamonn O'Grady (Snr), Ian Forde
and Simon Mc Guigan. Thanks to Mary Bohan, Ian Forde, Kennys shop,
Richard Mc Tiernan and Joe Early for sponsoring prizes on the night.
Thanks also to Forde's for hosting the event and serving sandwiches. A
final word of thanks to Seamus Gallagher for making out the questions
and acting as an excellent quiz-master. The next quiz will take place
in Wynne's Bar next Sunday night so please support.

Club Notes - 10th August 2010: |
IFC Round 3 |
We crashed to a very disappointing defeat in our last group game of
the Intermediate Championship on Saturday evening. Playing
championship favourites Aughawillan the team didn't do themselves or
all the training they have been doing any justice and were second best
from start to finish. Final scoreline: Drumkeerin 1-5, Aughawillan
1-11.
While disappointing we did enter the game knowing that a quarter
final birth was secure. Our opposition for that match on Sunday the
22nd of August in Drumshanbo at 7.15 became apparent on Sunday
afternoon after Ballinaglera defeated St Mary's to top their group.
Now in the last eight our performance must improve especially if we
intend on getting past our neighbours who have played exceptional
football to progress in the competition. The team have returned to
training and we wish them the best of luck over the next two weeks
ahead of the game.
|
JFC |
Our Junior side will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing
defeat last Sunday week when they take on Annaduff in their final
group game of the Junior Football Champsionship. The team have the
qualities to win this game and progress to the quarter-final and we
wish them and the management the best of luck. Throw in at Pairc Sean
is at 2:30pm.
|
Under 14s |
The Under 14s had a mixed week last week. On Monday night they were
unlucky in their defeat to Leitrim Gaels but they recovered last
Friday to record an impressive victory against neighbours Glenfarne.
The team are in action again this Friday away to Aughavas. Good luck
to the team and management.
|
Ladies football |
The ladies finished their league campaign on a disappointing note
losing to Aughawillan away on Sunday afternoon. However a look back at
the league and having won five games and lost four it was a successful
campaign for the girls given that it was their first year back in
existence. They now prepare for the championship which begins on
September 4th.
Meanwhile the Under 12s are in action this Saturday evening when they
take on Dromahaire down in the field at 7pm. It is must win game for
the girls if they hope of reaching the A final, no doubt they have the
capabilties to do it. Good luck.
|
Quiz night |
The first of the four quiz nights took place on Sunday night in the
Cosy Corner. Winners on the night were Joe Early, Eamon O'Grady Jnr

acted as brilliant quizmaster on the night. The quiz returns on Sunday
night in Forde's please support.

Gilhooley, Carrick; Alan McGee, Tarmon; Shane and Ellen c/o Carmel
O'Grady. Lotto returns in two weeks. Thanks again for everyone for

organised by Ballintogher GFC on Saturday morning. Under 8s and Under
10s put in great performances and the future is definitely bright for
the future.
|
Family Fun Day |
The family fun day took place in the field on Sunday afternoon. Great
weather greeted the day and despite a slow start a large amount of fun
was had by all of the children (and adults) who took part in the
events. Firstly thanks to everyone for attending. The day is ran by
the club for everyone to enjoy and hopefully that was the case.
A few people to mention: Gabriel Flynn and Ciaran White for
organising the entire day, the lads put in great work and deserve all
the plaudits. Thanks to Francis Davitt for cooking the burgers
provided kindly by Colm Clarke c/o Clarke's Butchers and Rory Duignan
who oversaw the shop. Thanks to Ethel McVeigh for paiting faces and
those players who hosted their events. A special word for the egg
throwing comeptition ran by Richard and Junior. This was undoubetdly
the most hotly contested and surely a keeper for years to come.
Thanks again to everyone.

Leaving and Junior Certificate |
Best of luck to all members of the club who are undertaking exams at
the moment. It is a stressful time so remember to stay calm, keep
relaxed and think of the football.
|
Shield Competition |
Hard luck to the Senior team who lost out to Drumreilly on Saturday
evening in the Shield Competition. Again it was a good peformance and
we controlled the game for long periods however we are just not making
it count on the scoreboard. Nevertheless that will come with practice
and with almost eight weeks to the championship and injuries starting
to return to action things are not as bleak as some people are making
out.
|
Juniors |
Our juniors rotten run of luck continued as they lost out to
Bornacoola at home in the league on Sunday afternoon. It was good to
see a number of younger players making an appearance and hopefully
that will continue for the summer.
|
Fixtures |
It is all action again this weekend. Our Senior side play St Mary's in
the Shield away on Saturday evening (Throw in@7pm) while on Sunday the
Junior team are at home to Annaduff (Throw in@1pm).

now play Ballinamore in their next game which if they win will lead
them to a final. Well done to all involved.
|
Juniors |
Hard luck to the Junior team and management following their loss to
Fenagh's first team in their ACL Division 3 game on Saturday evening.
Final score 4-10 to 0-3 points.
|

was an ever present on the first team this year and hopefully it won't
be too long until we see him in the maroon and white again.

Lotto |
Numbers drawn were 17, 19, 21,and 24. There was no winner of the jackpot. €20 runners up winners were Dessie Wynn, Aaron Wynne, Niamh
and Chris Farrell, Mary McPartland, Bray; and Fr Alwell. Congratulations and thanks to everyone for their continued support. Also thanks to sellers on the night. Next draw is on Saturday week - new sellers for June are Seamus Duignan, Brian Dolan and Daragh Flynn.
|
Under 16s win.....again!! |
The Under 16 express kept on rolling last Friday thanks to a hard earned win away against Carrigallen in the 15-a-side league. They say goals win games and that was certainly the case with the lads hittingth e onion bag five times. Final score Carrigallen 2-11; Drumkeerin
4-9. The game puts the team in a good position meaning that if they win their final two games they are assured of a final place. The first of
those games takes place this Friday at home to Annaduff. Throw in 7pm.
|
Shield Competition |
A somewhat patchwork team lined out for our Senior side for their first game in the Shield Competition against Cloone on Saturday evening. The competition is played without county players so between that, injuries and some absentees we were short a few regulars.
Despite shipping an eight point defeat there were a number of positives to take from the game. We could have even shocked a full strength Cloone team had we taken some of our chances on the day.
While it was disappointing to lose, the game was better than any training session and hopefully once we get a full team back in time
for championship we can make an impact.
Final score: Cloone 2-9; Drumkeerin 1-4.
|
ACL Division 3 |
Our Junior team are in action this Saturday when they take on Fenagh away at 7pm. Best of luck to the team and management.
|
Ladies miss out |
The Ladies senior team took on Glencar/Manorhamilton in the 9-a-side
competition on Sunday morning. In sweltering conditions the girls
failed to cope with the sheer physicality of a strong Manor side. Final score: 3-11 to 2-5.
Despite losing, the team can take heart from the fact that they created plenty of chances. The game also saw probably one the best
goals you are likely to see ANYWHERE this year with Shauna Clancy scoring a fantastic three -pointer from the tightest of angles. The ladies now have a break until July when the 13-a-side league begins.
|
Club Notes - 18th May 2010: |
Under 16s
|
Well done to the Under 16 team who defeated Allen Gaels on Wednesday evening down at the pitch. By all accounts it was a great performance with the lads winning out on a scoreline of 3-10 to 1-6. The lads are in action again on Friday evening away to Carrigallen. Best of luck.
|
Ladies |
Well done to the Ladies team who defeated Bornacoola in the first of their 9 a-side games. The girls were down by ten points entering the last quarter but a couple of late goals swung the game in their favour and the finished out eventual winners on a scoreline of 4-7 to 2-11. Next up is the north Leitrim derby at home to Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday which I am told is a must win. Please support.
|
ACL Division 3
|
Our junior side went down to a disappointing defeat at home to Allen Gaels on Saturday evening. A number of refereeing decisions went against us and we were simply unable to get on top of our near neighbours. Final score was Drumkeerin 1-3, Allen Gaels 3-11.
|
Shield Game |
We are involved in the first of our Shield games on Saturday evening. The seniors play Cloone, away, at 6.30pm. Best of luck to the team.
|
Hard Luck |
Hard luck to every member of the club involved with the Lough Allen College Senior Football team. They were involved in a Connacht Final against Sligo's Coola on Friday and were unlucky to lose out by 3 points.
|
Club Notes - 11th May 2010: |
Under 16s win |
Congrats to the Under 16 team and management who got their 15-a-side league campaign off to a terrific start against Glencar/Manorhamilton on Friday evening. The final scoreline was 1-14 to 1-7. The team are in action again this Friday evening at home to Allen Gaels at 7pm. Please support.
|
Ladies miss out
|
The Ladies were narrowly defeated in their latest game against Fenagh. I do not have the scoreline yet but my understanding was they were very unlucky to lose by three points. They are in action again this Sunday in the first of their 9 a-side games. Best of luck.
|
ACL Division 3 |
The Junior side will be hoping to register their first win of the league campaign when they take on Allen Gaels at 7pm on Saturday. Best of luck.
|
Boyz on tour |
A good contingent travelled to Westport at the weekend for Connor Woods' Stag party. The spa weekend was lovely and relaxing and everybody was well rested by the time they got home.
|

Club Notes - 20th April 2010: |
David O'Donnell RIP |
The Drumkeerin GAA club would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the family of David O'Donnell who died suddenly last week. David was such a jovial individual that to hear of his death was a shock to the entire community. Although he did not play with Drumkeerin in the last number of years he was involved at underage with the club and both his immediate and extended family have contributed immensely over the last number of years. A guard of honour from the club took part in the procession on Saturday evening before David was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon. May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
|
Fixtures |
As a result of David's untimely death all fixtures were postponed at the weekend as a mark of respect.
|
Phillip McGuinness RIP
|
The Drumkeerin GAA club would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the family of Phillip McGuinness and the Mohill GAA club. Philly's death has caused great shock in the entire GAA fraternity. He was a fantastic player for both club and county and he broke Drumkeerin hearts on many occasions when he played against us. One of life's true gentlemen his is a terrible loss to the world and our thoughts are with his mother Phil and brothers Michael and John. May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Weekend's action
|
Once again it is a busy weekend for many of our teams. Our table topping Ladies get things started when they take on Kiltubrid away on Saturday. Our Senior mens team are then in Action at 6.30pm away to Eslin. A win for both teams will put them in good positions heading to the halfway point of the leagues. Our Junior team will be hoping to pick themselves off the bottom of Division 3 when they take on Annaduff at home at 2.30pm. Please support.
|
Under 14s
|

Club Notes - 6th April 2010: |
ACL Division 2
|
They say fortune favours the brave and if that is the case our Senior side are as bold as brass as they escaped with a win in Round 3 of the ACL Division 2 against Aughnasheelin down at the pitch on Sunday.
A goal and a point near the end of the match secured a victory which for large periods of the second half looked seriously in doubt. The win puts us in a strong position looking ahead to the rest of the league and hopefully we can both build and improve on a performance that was patchy at best.
We started the game with great endeavour and clever play taking some great scores most notably from Daragh Flynn, John Cullen and Stephen Gilhooly. In fact our entire forward line were working extremely well together and looked continuously dangerous.
Our midfield paring of Colm Clarke and James McPartland were trucking well around the centre of the field and were well on top of the Aughnasheelin duo. Meanwhile our backs, as they have been for the entire league to date, were well on top, snuffing out numerous opposition attacks.
We went in at half time 7 points to 3 up and looked to be heading for a comfortable victory. That simply wasn't the case however as Aughnasheelin managed to equalise and then take the lead heading into the last ten minutes of the match.
Our play began to lose a little direction however three points down and only a minute of normal time to go we got a life line when this year's captain Colm Clarke stood up to the plate to take a goal. From the next kickout we won the ball and after John Cullen won a great free in front of goal it was up to Eddie 'Tevez' McTiernan to slot over and seal the win on a scoreline of 1-8 to 0-10.
Well done to both team and management on the win. No game is fixed for this weekend.
|
Senior Ladies Division Three
|
Prior to the Senior game our Senior ladies team lined out in their first home games since reforming this year. They were also pitted against Aughnasheelin.
Well done to Eamon, John Joe and the girls after they held out for a hard earned three point victory. Also best wishes to the players that had to go off injured. Keep an eye on the website for up coming fixtures.
|
Minors |
Hard luck to the minor team and management who lost by two points to Allen Gaels on Monday evening. The lads needed to win or hope results went their way to progress.
Allen Gaels are of course reigning champions from last year and if reports are to be believed we were denied a near certain penalty at the death that would have secured victory. The final scoreline was 4-7 to 3-8
No doubt the team and management will regroup for the champions and will be stronger for their experience this Spring.
|
Postponements |
Both the Junior and U14 games fell foul of the bad weather at the weekend. Our Under 14s are once again in action this Friday away to Gortlettragh at 6.30pm.
|

NFL Division 4

|
Upcoming fixtures |

On Saturday evening our Division 3 side will be hoping to bounce back from their opening defeats when they take on Gortlettragh at 5.15pm also in Drumkeerin. On Sunday we have a unique double header against Aughnasheelin. First up our Senior ladies - fresh from their opening day win - will be hoping to make it two from two at 12pm while at 2.30pm our Senior side will take to the field in their 3rd game of Division 2. Both games are in Drumkeerin. Best of luck to all the teams. Maybe it could be a clean sweep of wins.

After almost eight years out of action the newly reformed Drumkeerin Ladies side showed no signs of rustiness winning their first league game of the year. The Ladies, led by Eamon O'Grady and John Joe Byrne defeated Allen Gaels in Drumshambo on Sunday morning on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-01. Well done to all involved. Training continues and the team's next game is against Aughnasheelin at home on Easter Sunday.

|
On Monday night the Championship draws were made. Our junior team have been pitched against Allen Gaels and Annaduff this year while our Intermediate face Aughawillan and Annaduff also. |
Club Notes - 16th March 2010: |
Seniors |
Our Seniors went down away to Bornacoola on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-06. Despite the scoreline it was a good performance by the team who were short a few members of the panel.
Our next match is at home to Aughnasheelin in 2 weeks time. Watch this space for fixtures.
|
Minors |
Well done to the minor team and management who had a great result away to Melvin Gaels on Saturday morning in the MFL. It was an early start for the boys with an 11.30am throw-in but that didn't stop them powering to a well deserved 1-13 to 1-5 victory. The lads now play Allen Gaels in their final group game and are still in a shot of making it through.
|
Best Wishes |
Best wishes to players Jason Byrne and Aaron Wynne who sustained serious injuries in the last week. Jason badly damaged his shoulder against Mayo in the Under 21 championship while Aaron suffered a nasty knee injury at training. Both men are set to be on the sidelines for a number of months but hopefully it won't be too long until we see them back on the field of play.
|
Lotto |
Lotto took place at the weekend. There was no winner of the jackpot. €20 winners were David McDonnell, Limerick; Sean Lynch, Leitrim Village; Tommy Forde, Corralustia; John McTernan Snr, Greaghnaglogh; Rita McTernan, Greaghnaglogh. Drumkeerin GAA Awards Night
|
What a night. By all accounts last Saturday's GAA awards night in the Ramada Hotel was an unbelievable success.
Not only were the many wonderful young players of our club honoured but to top it all off we were treated with the presence of Tyrone's All-Star forward Stephen O'Neill.
Stephen spoke at great length to those in attendance with a message that anything is possible with the right mindset. He referred to the success of all the underage teams and encouraged those young players to stick together. If they do that then anything is possible.
It was great to have him there and a special word must go to Micheal Forde who arranged for the great man to come. Adding to that credit must go to all the ticket sellers who definitely got the message out there.
In addition to all the sides who collected trophies on the nights, players of the year were also announced. They were as follows: (Minor) Tomas Lavin; (Under 21)Aidan Dolan; (Junior) Daragh Flynn; (Senior) Damien McPadden. Well done to all the lads.
Also present on the night were Dan Gallogy and Attracta O'Reilly from Coiste na nOg and Ray O'Connor, his wife Anne and Bernie Clancy from the Ladies Board. Thank you for attending.
Thanks to Gabriel Flynn who provided DJ on the night. Gabriel has promised a night soon for part two of his entertaining show. Also thank you to Kevin Logue and Marie Flynn for the band. They were excellent and certainly got everyone up on their feet.
A special word to the Ramada Hotel and their staff for all the help on the night. It was a wonderful location for the event and the food was excellent. In addition to all this there were a number of sponsors of spot prizes on the night. Thanks to everyone that contributed. I don't have a full list but I will endeavour to get one in time for next week.
Finally thank you most of all to all of the people who attended on the night. 300 people packed in to celebrate the occasion demonstrating that the club is thriving on and off the field. Hopefully we will be back next year with even more success under our belts.

ACL Division 2: |
Drumkeerin...........................1-10
Glencar/Manorhamiton.........1-08
A strong second half comeback was enough to see us past a strong Glencar/Manorhamilton second team in the pitch on Sunday. Things did not look good in the first half when we went 7 points down despite be fairly level in possession.
The game marked the return to competitive action of Eddie McTiernan and despite little or no football over the last nine or so months Eddie delivered some great scores in the second period. He was greatly added by Daragh Flynn, Stephen Gilhooly, and Keith Gallagher whose goal turned the tie in our favour.
While it was in no means a perfect performance, the game at least showed that we have the belly for a contest when it presents itself. Our backs totally snuffed out a classy Glencar/Manor attack after the break and our mid-field pairing really got on top and drove at the Manor defence.
Well done to the team and management. Up next is Bornacoola away on Saturday week.
|
ACL Division 3: |
Our Junior side get their campaign underway against Sean O'Heslins at home on Saturday afternoon at 4pm. Please support. A good win will be the perfect tonic for the awards night.

Ladies training continues this week after a successful start last Friday night. A good number of players turned out for the team which will be coached by Eamon O'Grady Jnr and John Joe Byrne.
Apparently there was a number of 'old' faces returning to the fold after a few years in exile. We look forward to the start of games for them.
|
Minors: |
Our minors take on Melvin Gaels this Sunday away. If at all possible please support.

Soccer Tournament: |
On Sunday the 27th of December Drumkeerin GAA held a soccer tournament which raised funds for first aid kits for all of the club's teams. The event was held in the Handball alley.
By all accounts it was a great success and credit to organisers Gabriel Flynn and Ciaran White. The lads set up the competition with great enthusiasm and must be thanked.
From the first kick-off it was clear to see that some of the 16 teams had prepared better than others. No more so than KillKeerin Utd who took the final in a close encounter.
Armed with grace, poise and two lads from Dromahaire the team collected their commemorative trophies at a special function held in Davitts on the Sunday night. The team consisted of Colm Clarke, Lauraine Walpole and Christopher and Paddy McGowan.
Christy was awarded the Player of the Tournament gong while Kevie Forde was also handed a special presentation for his role a referee as the final by special guest on the night - Ciaran White.
Rumours are rife that the team have already committed themselves to defending their title later this year. Will they make it two in a row? Answers on a postcard please.
Thanks to everyone who took part. Joking aside it was a really enjoyable day and hopefully something that will become a Christmas tradition for the years ahead.
